How the SLS AMG Black Series 1:1 model took shape.
Milled, planed and drilled
New automobiles are formed from a soft and malleable material at the design centre. The design process for new automobiles breaks down into individual phases at Mercedes-Benz – one of the most important being the clay modelling stage. In clay, the designers' sketches and the engineers' specifications take on visible form for the first time. The modeller adroitly applies the material to the base model. Metal plates and planes are then used to work the modelling clay in an elaborate process until the proportions and contours emerge. The clay model renders design shapes visible for the first time. As such, clay models form an indispensable part of the design process. For the new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, too, it is the clay models which bring the initial design sketches to life.
