Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia is a breed apart: Turning the world of fashion – and seasons – upside down, this Antipodean event showcases select Spring/Summer 2012/13 collections from the southern hemisphere instead of the ubiquitous crop of Fall/Winter portfolios prevalent on most other catwalks. And yet, there is more to these shows and collections, offset by the stunning backdrop of Sydney’s harbour, than a mere seasonal switch. The event’s crop of designers, from well-known staples to emerging talents, evince a unique knack for laid-back elegance. After all, their entire country exudes a relaxed spirit – both in the outback and in Australia’s bustling metropolises. The visible – and wearable – hints of this trend: loose and flowing couture creations, avant-garde prints and plenty of glowing colours inspired by the continent’s surf and beach culture. Among this season’s special highlights: the Mercedes-Benz Presents show dedicated to Australian designer Johanna Johnson.
