On Set With Karlie Kloss
Top model Karlie Kloss on working with
Ryan McGinley and Jefferson Hack -
and why this shoot is special.
One of a kind.
People say she is the role model of grace; her walk is inimitable. It is true: Model Karlie Kloss does not just step on the catwalk, she boards it. She does not hold herself upright, she is ramrod straight. She does not walk, she glides. She is poised like a ballerina, yet her body control seems effortless. Her moves are soft, fluid and sensual. Then there is her energy, she is wide awake – her presence is that of a panther on the prowl. The 21-year old is one of a kind. And she is the perfect choice for the production of the key visual for Mercedes-Benz´ fashion engagement fall/winter 2013.
Much more than just a pretty face.
In this photo shoot she needs to be (even) more than just an ideal figure for the presentation of the all-white Chloé outfit she wears. Director Jefferson Hack and photo artist Ryan McGinley envision the new CLA as a subject with a mind of its own: Flexible, headstrong, excitingly fast and beautiful. It does not suffice that Karlie Kloss is a beautiful young woman. She needs to stand up to the car, be at eye level. It is a role that fits her: With her mix of childlike energy and grown-up up femininity she makes for a perfect equal.
A premiere – for both the model and the car.
Karlie Kloss does not owe her charisma to luck. Years of ballet lessons have helped her to control her body the way she does. She talks about being extraordinarily tall as a teenager and how dancing prevented her from just being lanky and awkward. She has been working as a model ever since she was thirteen – and has known Jefferson Hack and Ryan McGinley for a couple of years – she is even friends with McGinley. Working with a car is new to her, though: “This is the first time I’ve ever done a shoot, where it’s based around a car. I feel very exclusive because it’s the new model of this car and it’s not even released yet to the world.” She wanted to make sure she wouldn´t just get to see the new CLA and be seen with it in the production of the key visual and film. Karlie Kloss wanted to test drive the car herself:
“I brought my driver’s license to the shoot actually, because I wanted to make sure I would be able to drive in the shoot.”
