AMG's latest engine development highlight

Switch off from time to time.

The engine in the SLK 55 AMG is the proud bearer of the title as the world's most economical eight-cylinder engine. This is due, above all, to the newly developed AMG Cylinder Management system. "Management" can be understood quite literally here. The system automatically shuts off four out of the eight cylinders as soon as they are no longer needed in partial load situations. This reduces fuel consumption by an impressive 30 percent compared with the previous model. Just how well the system functions has been demonstrated at the very highest level. The technology is used in similar form in Formula 1 motor racing engines where, after all, efficiency is often the factor deciding over victory or defeat. During slow cornering, in safety car phases or during pit stops, for example, four or six cylinders are deactivated by cutting off the fuel injection.

By adopting this innovative system from the world of motorsport for use on the road, Mercedes-AMG is underlining in impressive style its claim to technological leadership in terms of performance and efficiency. But how does the AMG Cylinder Management system work in everyday practice?

Fuel consumption combined: 8.4 l/100 km;
CO2 emissions combined: 195 g/km*

Full V8 experience, full tank.

The main AMG menu in the instrument cluster keeps you informed as to whether the cylinder shut-off system is activated and whether the engine is running on four or eight cylinders.

The cylinder shut-off function is available across a broad engine speed range of 800 to 3600 rpm, as long as the "C" (Controlled Efficiency) transmission mode is selected.

The four-cylinder mode puts 230 newton metres at your disposal – a figure corresponding to more than 50 percent of maximum torque. As soon as you feel the need for additional power at the wheel of the SLK 55 AMG and leave the partial load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight will also switch in. The transition from four-cylinder to eight-cylinder operation is effected spontaneously in milliseconds and without any impact on comfort. This is possible thanks to the intelligent interaction of the powerful engine management system with 16 hydraulically selectable compensating elements and the sophisticated oil feed system in the cylinder head. Fuel supply and ignition are deactivated in a parallel process. The newly developed naturally aspirated engine thus achieves the fuel consumption figures of a four-cylinder engine, yet combines this with the strong power delivery expected of a V8. And that's what it sounds like, too.
