A pioneer in matters of safety.

Mercedes-Benz has consistently pursued its vision of “Real Life Safety” since 1969 and each new discovery helps improve road safety. In line with this philosophy, every one of the group’s vehicle series, from passenger cars to commercial vehicles, comes under the watchful eye of the Accident Research unit at Mercedes-Benz. This is the foundation for the continuous improvement of the vehicles and the development of new and even more effective safety systems. Hazardous driving situations, typical hazard spots and sources of danger are analysed with the aid of high-tech instruments. The primary objective of accident research at Mercedes-Benz is to pinpoint the causes of serious accidents and to effectively counteract their consequences. The prime motivation for new developments in safety at Mercedes-Benz is therefore life itself.

„Real Life Safety“.

The Mercedes-Benz safety concept is based systematically around real-life accidents. The company routinely investigates serious accidents that occur on German roads in order to obtain important insights, which are fed into the vehicle safety of tomorrow. In doing so, Mercedes-Benz works closely with the police. They inform the accident researchers in Sindelfingen whenever a current Mercedes-Benz model is involved in a serious accident. The researchers analyse the deformation at the scene and on the vehicles involved. They examine the scene of the accident and the occupants’ injuries if they wish to help clarify what caused the accident.

Using statements from the vehicle occupants, information from the accident reports as well as additional photos and sketches, the researchers create computer simulations that enable them to view and accurately reconstruct the course of events leading up to the accident from different perspectives. It’s a process that resembles the painstaking detective work of Sherlock Holmes and his ilk.

On numerous occasions in the past, accident research by Mercedes-Benz has set ground-breaking protection systems and safety standards in motion. The offset crash test first conducted in 1973 was developed in Sindelfingen and became a globally recognised standard.

Developments such as the airbag and ESP have contributed for decades to more positive trends in accident statistics worldwide. In particular, the rapid introduction of the electronic stability programme ESP across all vehicle series at Mercedes-Benz led to a significant reduction in the number of accidents. Today’s Mercedes-Benz models offer exceptional levels of passenger safety and are among the safest cars in the world. It is this fact that recently enabled two passengers to emerge completely unscathed from a CLS that was run over by a tractor. Such a bizarre accident is unusual even for the accident researchers. Despite the severity of the crash, the passenger compartment remained totally intact. The sturdy roof frame assembly acted as a shield to protect the passengers from injury. For the safety engineers and accident researchers, it was proof of the quality of their work.
