Welcome to Mercedes-Benz International

This year too, the Laureus Media Awards were awarded for social commitment in sports.

2013 Laureus Media Awards.

Fair play for all.

Amadei Weiland, a former contestant from the German TV show "Wetten, dass!", also received an award at the ninth Laureus Media Awards.

A heart for obstacles.

Loud applause resounds through the room. Unpretentiously, almost a little shyly, Amadei Weiland steps on to the stage to receive his prize. This is an unfamiliar picture if you know this young man from his YouTube videos. In them, the free running athlete from Berlin does multiple somersaults off walls, easily overcomes metre-high obstacles and generally appears to defy all the laws of gravity. Amadei Weiland has just won the 2013 "Laureus Media Award: Social Media" in the "Video" category.

The Laureus Media Award was awarded for the ninth time.

The power to
change the world.

The Laureus Media Award was awarded for the ninth time. It is awarded not only to acknowledge sports reporting but also for people and initiatives showing outstanding social conscience in the world of sports.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation works to achieve social change and improves the lives of disadvantaged children by numerous sports projects.

The prize-winners with a social conscience.

Sport and honour.

The crucial factor considered every year by the jury, which consists of the Laureus ambassadors and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation board, is how great an achievement the nominees have made in helping Laureus to gain media attention in a remarkable way. With its outstanding articles, Sportbild Magazine was the print medium which has best fulfilled these expectations. In the TV category, the SPORT 1 channel scored best, while netzathleten.de did best in the online media category. The competition in the "Social Media" category was aimed at young sports enthusiasts. Members of the public were able to submit videos and photos to Facebook over a period of ten weeks under the heading of "Tricks, Team Spirit and Tolerance".

Whilst Lucas Klein was photographed doing an impressive back flip in front of a cloudy sky, the jury's hearts were won by the phenomenal stunt video by free running artist and business management student Amadei Weiland.

Laureus ambassador Franz Beckenbauer also received honours.

Sports in the right place.

Numerous German celebrities are Laureus ambassadors. All of them are highly involved in Laureus, but one of them stood out remarkably this year: Franz Beckenbauer can now boast the title "Greatest Commitment for Laureus". His project "Football boots for Rio", launched in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz, has provided new sports gear for children from the favelas. The gear was transported in a Sprinter. Also, the "Freestyle Kassel" project was awarded the "2013 Laureus Media Prize: Social Sports Project". Freestyle Kassel supports disadvantaged children, young people and young adults with numerous free sporting activities, including football and martial arts. The initiative is thus their port of call for queries and advice as well as for issues requiring mediation.

For years, Patricia Riekel has been responsible for the "Tribute to Bambi" foundation.

Providing real help is
what earns a prize.

Not only celebrities but also journalists contribute their efforts: this year, Patricia Riekel, chief editor of BUNTE magazine, was delighted to receive the "Honorary Prize". She was awarded the prize personally by the Laureus board member

Harald Schuff for her many years of good work for the "Tribute to Bambi" foundation which helps child support projects in Germany.
