"It feels amazing"

On a crisp but sunny afternoon, the reporters and photographers weren’t just focused on proceedings at the start and finish line of the Circuito de Jerez in southern Spain. One eye was on the clock, too, because when it comes to recording important events – and especially in motorsport – every second counts. At exactly 1.43 p.m. on 4 February 2013, it was time. MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton approached in two Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and then pulled back the fine black cover under which the new car was concealed. They presented the new F1 W04 – a Silver Arrow will mark a new era of motorsport for Mercedes-Benz.

"The car felt amazing. I could attack straight away", explained an excitable Nico Rosberg shortly afterwards. He had the honour of driving the first few laps ahead of his new team-mate Lewis Hamilton."

In contrast to its predecessor, the F1 W04 does not have a stepped nose, instead favouring a ‘vanity panel’, which also brings an aerodynamic benefit.

Refined evolution.

As the technical regulations for this year have only seen small changes, the engineers at the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team have retained their basic concept, while at the same time opting for a new five-element front wing design and employing a second-generation Coanda exhaust. The design of the rear end and in particular its aerodynamics have now also been optimised. In order to improve the life and performance of the F1 W04's tyres, the Mercedes engineers have kept retained pushrod front suspension and used a pullrod configuration at the rear. The rear end of the F1 W04 was designed to be particularly compact in order to free up the most potential for aerodynamic performance.

In contrast to its predecessor, the car does not feature a stepped nose; instead, the designers opted for a small ‘vanity panel’ in its place, which provides the Silver Arrow with yet another aerodynamic advantage.

Many thousands of man-hours.

"The 2013 season signals the beginning of a new era for our Silver Arrow works team", assures team manager Ross Brawn. "The restructuring which happened within the team over the last 18 months now puts us in a good position. This is clear just by looking at the design and level of detail that has been achieved on the F1 W04;

the progression is very clear when compared to the predecessor model. Our technical departments in Brackley and Brixworth have invested many thousands of man-hours to ensure that the new car offers clear performance enhancements compared to the previous season."

A successful tradition in motorsport.

Toto Wolff, the new Executive Director of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS, emphasises that: "The first laps with a new car are always very emotive. Today was no different. This is even more so the case when that car is a Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow:

Mercedes-Benz has a long-standing tradition in motorsport and we are proud to be able to represent and do justice to this."

Bringing performance
to the track.

In total, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton will take part in four test days as part of the presentation week programme. Preparation for the start of the season in Melbourne, Australia on 17 March 2013 has already begun, as explains Rosberg: "I've already got to know the vehicle in the simulator and it seems to work well in the virtual world. Now we have to complete an arduous and intense test program. We have to make sure that we can also use the car's performance on the track." Lewis Hamilton was also equally excited: "It's an honour for me to tread in the footsteps of legends like Juan Manuel Fangio, Sir Stirling Moss and Michael Schumacher. I'm extremely pleased and really keen to see how the new car will develop."
