Sustainability.

Lower CO2 emissions and reduced costs: two things that go hand in hand
at Dreier - with the new Actros.

One Step Ahead.

"We're doing a lot to minimise environmental pollution", says Hans-Peter Dreier, managing director of the transportation company that bears his name. Based in the Swiss canton of Solothurn, the family-run business maintains a fleet of around 200 trucks. Of those, 44 are the new Actros with low-emission Euro VI engines – even though the Euro VI standard does not come into force until the end of 2014. This puts Dreier AG one step ahead of many other companies.

CUTTING CONSUMPTION AND COSTS.

For a Swiss transportation company, taking the issue of sustainability seriously is not just a question of attitude, but to a certain extent also a matter of survival, because no other country has such strict regulations. One of them reads: vehicles with over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight are subject to the distance-related heavy vehicle fee (LSVA), which is based on distance covered, gross vehicle weight – and vehicle emissions. This means that operators opting for fuel-efficient Euro VI engines, and consequently reduced CO2 emissions, stand to save money. Although this cash saving is available only in Switzerland, it is quite generally the case that more and more customers are attaching importance to transport services that generate as few CO2 emissions as possible. This means that the new Actros with Euro VI engine can have a positive impact on a company's order books.

Dreier has cut its fuel bill by between 3% and 5% compared with the tried-and-tested Actros.

Streamspace To Fleetboard.

Dreier is cutting CO2 emissions, as well as costs, through its fuel consumption. This is another area where the new Actros, the world fuel-saving champion, also pays for itself. For example with the especially aerodynamic StreamSpace cab, with which every new Actros in the Dreier fleet is equipped. Or with the standard-installed Mercedes PowerShift 3 automatic transmission with the "fleet" driving program. The system helps drivers to save fuel while at the wheel. A further benefit is the reduced load on the powertrain. The company also uses FleetBoard in its trucks. The FleetBoard scores are now even used as part of the process for calculating drivers' bonus payments.

Less Speed,
More Payload.

Two instructors help the drivers to save fuel. Both were trained by Mercedes-Benz's professional trainer for the Swiss market. In addition, the trucks have been throttled to a speed of 84 kilometres per hour. "FleetBoard motivates the drivers to get the best possible score", says Hans-Peter Dreier.

"Furthermore, a top speed of 84 km/h means that they are considerably more relaxed at the end of their day's work. "The company has even gone one step further and is now using more than 20 double-decker semitrailers with an especially high cargo-carrying capacity – which means fewer trips and therefore lower emissions.
