Mixed Tape #56: Edgy,
Energising, Emotional, Exclusive.
Mesmerising music treats: Introducing ten talents between Porto and Orlando, the newly minted Mixed Tape #56 adds a spring to our step – and a bunch of free downloads to your personal player!
Once again, we have gone into hyper-focused overdrive to plough the international scene for new sonic treasures, separate inspired wheat from insipid chaff – and unearth some truly stunning tracks along the way.
With this edition’s focus on musical layers, Mixed Tape #56 highlights the sheer breath-taking range of contemporary styles and approaches. Split evenly between a US and European contingent, no side of the Atlantic emerges a clear winner. Instead, we get to scale ever-new ambitious heights with a. o. E Lancelot’s spirited and spiritual indie pop, glowing urban/urbane R&B from New York’s Neonfaith, complex alt rock anthems by East Coast collective Young Tricksters, an über-cute folksy contribution by Orlando’s SALES and haunting dream pop from Wisconsin courtesy of Haunter’s soothing shoegaze grooves.
Meanwhile, Old Europe keeps things interesting with the saintly electro pop sounds of St George (Germany), a dose of slick lovestep by UK-meets-Denmark’s Dillistone, foot-tapping
house from Liverpool’s Weasel Feet, French electronique- beats by HEXAGONE and an exciting Mixed Tape exclusive: an unreleased track by progressive Portuguese producer Raez.
Urban collage of colour and inspiration.
The result is an edgy, urban mix – and one that deserves its own artwork. This edition’s Mixed Tape cover was forged in the studio of Stuttgart native Marc C. Woehr who picked apart and reassembled the compilation’s musical and metropolitan elements into a cool collage of towering speakers, city sounds and urban landmarks, juxtaposed with jagged flashes of colour and inspiration.
